Two thousand years
ago, the Lord Gautama Buddha delivered His First Sermon in a deer park
near Benares, time has hallowed the Sarnath sculpture that was put upto
commemorate the momentous event, areplica of the sculpture found its
way to far off Sikkim where, in a valley on the fringe of Tashiling
the Imperial Secretariat, a sheer 1,000 feet below, it was enshrined
and a deer park created. The park, a sanctuary for deer from Sikkim
and neighbouring countries, is a symbol of peace and harmony between
neighbours. The enthroned Deity faces the Secretariat, it is, as it
were, guiding light expressing the hope, in Buddhist scholar-saint Shantidev’s
prayer that righteousness should ever prevail in the governance of the
land. Steeped in region, the mysticism, the prayer flags, the stupas,
the monasteries set the mood, while the curling mists around the robed
Lamas sounding the long trumpets in distant valleys heighten the effect
and set the pace. The royal chapel. “Tsuklakhang Royal” respository
of Buddhist scriptures, stands resplendent in the Palace grounds. Lamas
chanting prayers, beating cymbals, drums, reeds and trumpets welcome
you to Rumtek Monastery, 24 km from the capital. Colourfull dressed,
in saffron, yellow or maroon robes, the lamas offer a picture of peace
and tranquillity—this is indeed over all a Buddhist region par excellence.
